Modern Residence

Objectives

-Budget-friendly (relative-to-scale)

-Intuitive for guests

More often than not, technology is the very last discipline considered when building a new residence and this was no exception. By the time we were engaged, the client was already 15% over-budget. Additionally, as a vacation home that the owner planned on sharing with friends, it was imperative that all the technology was very simple and self-explanatory.

User Interfaces

With such vast space in the home, utilizing standard light switches that present in rows and rows of switch banks would’ve been a nightmare. Consequently, our fundamental priority was to plan a centralized lighting system that accommodates its’ user with backlit, engraved, buttons that group the most common light loads into a single button press. Additionally, by incorporating multi-media features into the same UI, we were able to reduce redundancies and keep a clean aesthetic.

Regardless of the systems sophistication, accessing media and television content, held to the same “as simple as possible” as the rest of the system. Although control system remotes are rather intuitive, from a distance, they can seem intimidating for inexperienced users. As such, we decided to specify the factory equipment remotes and designed the back-end to operate seamlessly without any additional equipment.

As a bare minimum, the client needed to be able to have complete control over the expansive property without traversing back and forth for hours a week. The result was a few strategically placed “command centers” that gave them complete control. By planning specialized “scenes” the client was able to guide unfamiliar guests to key areas of the home without the necessity to accompany them (in the middle of the night).

Lighting

The client’s primary interior focus was lighting.

Notwithstanding the rather laborious task of locating the perfect fixtures, the client was able to save more than 30% on the fixtures we found.

Variables such as size, shape, artistic expression, and light temperature were all taken into consideration when specifying fixtures that met the client’s high expectations.

Result

The client was more than satisfied upon completion. They received exactly what they had hoped…for 25% less than a conventionally designed solution would’ve cost.
